چکیده

The increasing complexity of engineering problems makes the coupling of multiple simulation codes attractive. In fluid mechanical applications, the physical range of flow phenomena that can be modeled can be extended significantly by coupling flow solvers based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approach and on LargeEddy Simulations (LES). These separate flow solvers run simultaneously and exchange information at the interface. However, since the LES flow solver operates usually with a much smaller time-step, the LES data has to be sampled in order to provide data for the RANS flow solver. In the sampling process aliasing errors can occur. This study investigates possibilities in order to suppress aliasing errors while preserving the amplitude and phase of the long wave spectrum.

Numerical Study of Reynolds Number Effects on Flow over a Wall-Mounted Cube in a Channel Using LES

Turbulent flow over wall-mounted cube in a channel was investigated numerically using Large Eddy Simulation. The Selective Structure Function model was used to determine eddy viscosity that appeared in the subgrid scale stress terms in momentum equations. Studies were carried out for the flows with Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 40000. To evaluate the computational results, data was compa...

A dynamic stochastic forcing method as a wall-layer model for large-eddy simulation

Turbulence-resolving simulations of wall-bounded flows at high Reynolds numbers are presently unattainable due to the need to resolve fully the energy-carrying eddies in the near-wall region. Hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/large-eddy simulations (RANS/LES), in which the nearwall eddies are modelled in a Reynolds-averaged sense, provide a cost-saving alternative. However previous attempt...

A study of differentiation errors in large-eddy simulations based on the EDQNM theory

This paper is concerned with the investigation of numerical errors in large-eddy simulations by means of two-point turbulence modeling. Based on the eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian (EDQNM) theory, a stochastic model is developed in order to predict the time evolution of the kinetic energy spectrum obtained by a large-eddy simulation (LES), including the effects of the numerics. Using this fr...

Wall-layer Models for Large-eddy Simulations

■ Abstract Because the cost of large-eddy simulations (LES) of wall-bounded flows that resolve all the important eddies depends strongly on the Reynolds number, methods to bypass the wall layer are required to perform high-Reynolds-number LES at a reasonable cost. In this paper the available methodologies are reviewed, and their ranges of applicability are highlighted. Various unresolved issues...

Large-eddy simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity

Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All filtering lev...
